In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper, and a drifter named Max.

In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.

In the twenty-first century, a corporation develops androids to be used as slaves in colonies outside of the Earth, identified as "replicants".

In , a former Police Officer is hired to hunt down a fugitive group of replicants living undercover in Los Angeles, California.

Written by MadMovieManiac. This is truly one of the greatest science fiction films ever made, one that requires a thinking viewer in order to understand and appreciate it.

The director's cut is the recommended one to see as it omits a somewhat distracting narration and avoids an unnecessary Hollywood-style ending that is at odds with the rest of the film's tone.

A true science fiction story or film is about ideas, not spaceship battles, futuristic gadgets, or weird creatures.

These themes are set in a fairly basic detective story that moves slowly but gradually builds power as the viewer is immersed in a dystopian futuristic Los Angeles.

Harrison Ford fans accustomed to the normally dynamic roles that he plays may be dissatisfied with the seemingly lifeless lead character that he portrays here as the replicant-hunting detective known as a "blade runner".

They should be, for this dissatisfaction is part of the film experience, part of the dehumanized existence in the story's setting.

However, as the story unfolds, we see Ford's character, Rick Deckard, slowly come alive again and recover some humanity while pursing four escaped replicants.

The replicants, genetically-engineered human cyborgs, that Deckard must hunt down and kill are in many ways more alive than Deckard himself initially.

Their escape from an off-world colony has an explicit self-directed purpose, whereas Deckard's life appears to have none other than his job, one that he has tried to give up.

By some standards, Deckard and the replicants have thin character development. However, this is a deeply thematic and philosophical film, and as such the characters are the tools of the story's themes.

There are several dramatic moments involving life-and-death struggles, but most of these are more subdued than in a normal detective story plot.

The film's power is chiefly derived through its stunning visual imagery of a dark futuristic cityscape and its philosophical themes.

Among the themes explored are the following: - The dehumanization of people through a society shaped by technological and capitalistic excess.

If you are not someone who naturally enjoys contemplating such themes, the film's brilliance may be lost on you. The climax involves a soliloquy that brings many of the themes together in a simple yet wonderfully poetic way.

Anyone who "gets" the film should be moved by this; others will sadly miss the point and may prefer watching some mindless action flick instead.

A San Diego sneak preview shown only once in May The US theatrical version released by the studio included the "happy ending" as well as the addition of Harrison Ford's voiceover.

Although several different versions of the script had included a narration of some sort to clarify the narrative, Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott had decided to add filmed scenes to provide the information.

But financiers rewrote and reinserted narration during post-production after test audience members indicated difficulty understanding the film.

Scott did not have final cut privilege for the version released to cinemas. It was not an organic part of the film. I never thought they'd use it.

But I didn't try and sandbag it. It was simply bad narration. The "Happy Ending" refers to the scene after Deckard and Rachael leave the apartment.

Gaff spares Rachael's life, allowing her and Deckard to escape the nauseating confines of Los Angeles. They drive away into a natural landscape, and in the voice-over narrative, Deckard informs us that despite what Gaff had said "It's too bad she won't live.

But then again who does? The International Cut , minutes --also known as the "Criterion Edition" or unrated version--included three more violent action scenes than the US theatrical version.

The US broadcast version , minutes was the US theatrical version edited by television company CBS to tone down the violence, profanity, and nudity to meet broadcasting restrictions.

In this version, the initial text crawl at the start of the movie explaining what a replicant is "Early in the 21st Century The actual text of the opening text crawl is different from the US theatrical release: "Early in the 21st Century, robots known as Replicants were created as off-world slave labor.

Identical to humans [sic], Replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence, to the genetic engineers who created them.

After a bloody mutiny, Replicants were declared illegal on earth. Special police squads, Blade Runner Units, had orders to shoot to kill trespassing Replicants.

This was not called execution. It was called 'retirement'". The Ridley Scott-approved Director's Cut , minutes [12] was prompted by the unauthorized and theatrical release of the workprint version of the movie.

The Director's Cut contained significant changes from the theatrical workprint version. Scott provided extensive notes and consultation to Warner Bros.

In October , Arick discovered a 70mm print of Blade Runner at the Todd-AO vaults while searching for soundtrack masters for other films.

Until the screening, no one had been aware that this print was the workprint version. Owing to this surprise, Warner Bros.

Ridley Scott publicly disowned this workprint version of the film as a "director's cut," citing that it was roughly edited, lacked a key scene, and the climax did not feature the score composed for the film by Vangelis.
